Meet Your Farmers: Mead Acres
Mead Acres is a small, chemical-free farm in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Owner Steve Mead used the knowledge gained from growing up next to an orchard in Indiana to start Mead Acres and grow the diverse, delicious selection of vegetables, fruits and herbs he brings to the market each week.

Mead Acres specializes in tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, eggplants, okra and cucumbers, in addition to the gloriously large and fragrant bunches of basil he sells throughout the season. Steve Mead cultivates approximately 15 varieties of cherry tomatoes and 25 varieties of regular tomatoes, nearly all of which come from organic seed. While not certified as an organic grower, Steve is a member of the growing population of farmers who are “chemical-free”, using organic growing methods and practices without applying for formal organic certification. “My customers know me and know how I practice my farming methods so they can trust the products I sell each week,” said Mead.

You can find Steve Mead and his wonderful selection of tasty produce each Saturday at the Mead Acres booth near the Scottie’s Coffee shop on the East side of High Street.

Get to Know: Ground Cherries
You might have spotted the unusual fruit known as the ground cherry (Physalis) at several of our market stalls. A relative of the tomato, ground cherries resemble an orange/yellow cherry tomato once they are removed from their papery outer husk. Ground cherries may look like a tomato but their taste is more akin to a mild strawberry. They have low acidity and a subtle sweetness that make them perfect for snacking out of hand, adding to salads or incorporating them into pies or jellies.

Ground cherries are in season right now, so look for them the next time you’re at the market and give them a try. You won’t be sorry!
